Chalkida is the main gate to the island of Evia, the second largest island in Greece after Crete and the name derives from the copper mines that were mined in that area. Having two ports in Euripus straits, Chalkida was one of the most prosperous and progressive cities in Ancient Greece and a crossroad of cultures and ideas over the centuries. Today Chalkida is a cosmopolitan city and a popular destination with an impressive modern cable bridge making the access to the city much easier and quicker. Chalkida is particularly famous for the swift change of water direction every six hours that stops water movement for about eight minutes, a rare physical phenomenon that triggers the imagination and curiosity. DAY 2 CHALKIDA-TRIKERI 67 MILES
TRIKERI
Trikeri is a port located in Volos, Magnisia on the slopes of Mt. Tissaio. Because of its position it was an important naval center and home to the well-known sponge harvesters. The picturesque port consists of beautiful houses and decorated churches. The locals keep till today the traditions and celebrate in annual religious fests dressed in their embroidered-with-gold costumes.

Skiathos is the most popular and cosmopolitan island of the Sporades complex. A paradise on earth with pine forests and crystal clear waters of picturesque and unspoiled beauty. The impressive beach of Lalaria is accessible only by sea while the beach of Koukounaries has been declared the third most beautiful beach in the Mediterranean. Skopelos is located between the islands of Skiathos and Alonissos and belongs to the Sporades complex. With golden coasts, azure waters, traditional architecture, eye-catching landscapes and virgin pine forests covering more than half the territory, it is obvious why Skopelos was selected as the perfect set for the famous movie “Mamma Mia”. The island is famous for its numerous churches, with over 360 churches, chapels and monasteries and the sandy beaches with pine trees reaching to the shore. Alonissos is famous for its incredible natural beauty and the amazing beaches. Pine forests, olive groves and orchards form a magnificent natural landscape while the miraculous herbs growing into the island keep alive the deep-rooted tradition of folk medicine and homeopathy. The pristine sandy beaches of crystal clear waters offer unforgettable moments of serenity and the picturesque harbor and capital of the island, Patitiri, with the stone paved waterfront capture the essence of a typical Greek island. Alonissos main characteristic is that it hosts the National Marine Park of Northern Sporades, a refuge for rare seabirds, dolphins and the largest on the world population of the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus-Monachus. According to scientists, 2/3 of the total Monachus-Monachus seals, which are considered as the most endangered mammals on earth, live in the Greek seas. The Marine Park consists of the area between the southeastern Skopelos and Alonissos, 94% of which is sea; the remaining 6% is composed of little inhabited islands, with great ecological significance and unrivaled beauty, making this the largest protected sea area in Europe.

Skyros is the largest of the Sporades islands and has truly been blessed in terms of natural beauty. The scenic Port of Linaria welcomes the visitors to magic scenery. Cobbled alleys lead to Skyrian houses of unique architecture; flat roof and particular interior decoration. Skyros has long soft sandy beaches with azure waters and a landscape of diversions - luscious and green forests on the north and rocky dominating mountains in the south. Skyros is famous for its fine carpentry and the breeding of the rare small sized horses called ‘Skyrian horses’.

Andros is the northernmost island of the group with a great naval tradition; an attractive island with rich history and elegant beauty. The coastline of Andros is particularly rugged creating many small, picturesque bays.
